Now, given anime's track record of having amazing and also questionably bad content . The title alone of Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon sends up warning flags. The anime is based on the light novel series written by Fujino Ōmori. Now, if you don't know what a light novel is, it's basically a short novel aimed at teens and young adults usually with a few anime inspired illustrations on the covers and throughout the book.
"Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon instead makes the setting a real fantasy world where people go about their daily lives and have no drama about being trapped and dying because of a game"
Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon has been called a ripoff of Sword Art Online with more fan service ( fan service in anime refers to brief glimpses or an emphasis on female/male body parts ). If you missed out on the craze that took over the anime community with SAO , then you have been living under a rock or are new to this whole thing. In that case, welcome! Calling Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon a ripoff or anything close would be a stretch. SAO focused on people playing a virtual reality game who become trapped and are forced to escape by beating the game. Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon instead makes the setting a real fantasy world where people go about their daily lives and have no drama about being trapped and dying because of a game. That isn't to say that there isn't any risk of death. There in fact is plenty of risk throughout the show. What there isn't is a glut of fan service as one might expect. Yes, the shows main female character, the goddess Hestia, has the infamous boob string that took the internet by storm a few months back. It was even reported as a fashion trend in Japan by American media. Despite this, the show doesn't have continuous boob shots, but do expect occasional fan service here and there. There are also plenty of role playing game references with characters actually gaining experience and leveling up their abilities. Though this process is more vague and complicated than one might except.
Now, what is the show exactly about and why does it have a title that makes me cry every time I have to type it out? It's simple, if not convoluted. The gods and goddesses descend upon earth and seal away their power. They then take up humans, not the only race within the show, and form familia's which are like guilds. and carefully foster their growth by having them undertake missions within an enormous spire containing a dungeon with all sorts of monsters and loot. The show's hero is Bell Cranel, a 14 year old who was taken up by the goddess Hestia as her only follower. Bell's grandfather would often tell him him tales of how heroic it is to be an adventurer and save women along the way. So, Bell grows up with those ideals, but ends up being a very kind hearted if not flimsy guy.
"A lot of the drama in Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon comes from Bell's insecurities and feelings of inadequacy"
A lot of the drama in Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon comes from Bell's insecurities and feelings of inadequacies. In fact, the roles end up being reversed from what he envisioned and ends up being saved by women plenty of times. The main focus of Bell's attention is the prodigal adventurer Aiz Wallenstein, much to the chagrin of his goddess Hestia who is infatuated with him. The story is mainly about Bell's struggle to surpass his limits and grow and change. Yes, there is actual character development in this show. Crazy, right?
The show also touches upon what it means to be a family. Supporting characters join Bell's side and learn the dynamics of being with a group of people who care about them which is a luxury within the world of Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon. Pride and knowing when to toss it away for a greater good are themes used within the show as well. Oddly enough, there is not a lot of picking up girls in dungeons throughout the show. Though there are plenty of female characters interested or hovering around Bell.
The animation should be noted for having pleasant character designs , a tad derivative and typical, mostly smooth action scenes. There are plenty of action scenes as well throughout the show. Not the best ones we've seen, but the show's animation is very competent.
"So far this show seems pretty great, right? Well, it does have its problems"
So far this show seems pretty great, right? Well, it does have its problems. Namely the initial slow start. There is actually a pretty interesting plot going on in the background, but it's not really focused on too much. Instead, we get some scenes with Hestia pinning over which is cute, but totally unnecessary. Character threads and story lines are also left hanging. People get introduced or concepts explained, and we never get a fulfilling follow up.The other issue is the source material. Anime based on ongoing light novels and manga are notorious for having extremely long waits between seasons or just never get a second season. Now, given that Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon was extremely popular it is highly likely that we will see a second season. Unfortunately, it seems like they burned through a pretty big chunk of the material so far and if they rush a second season , we might see them padding out episodes with needless fluff as is common with anime based on continuing works.
Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon is not the continuation of the current comeback in quality seen in anime, but it is a very competent show that rises above its title and manages to surpass expectations. It's definitely an anime for anime fans and I would not recommend as anyone's first show, but I can not deny having enjoyed watching it. It does not reinvent the wheel, but it does manage to keep it rolling.
